Independence Townships Parks, Recreation, and Seniors

Independence Township Parks, Recreation & Seniors are the main resource for leisure, recreation and activities in the Clarkston Community.  Our 3 divisions work together to make our community a better place to live, work and play by building connections with neighbors and the outdoors.

In 2016 we became one of only four departments throughout Michigan to earn National Accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies.  This vigorous process required putting common industry standards in place for the well-being of our community and CAPRA recognized Independence Township Parks, Recreation & Seniors for our dedication and excellence in operation and services.

We provide 5 area parks, including the Community Garden, as well as special events, programs and activities all year round through those avenues.  Our office partners with Clarkston Community Education to provide registration for their classes.  We recently finished renovations on Brady Lodge at Bay Court Park and Softball Fields 1&2 at Clintonwood Park.  This years’ projects include replacing the Splash Pad at Clintonwood Park and partnering with the Easter Seals to introduce a Miracle Field, a custom designed all-inclusive sports field.

Our day camps are offered for Kindergarten through eighth grade and continue to fill every year.   Our youth soccer and baseball recreational leagues provide instructional leagues that teach the value of teamwork and following direction.  Our programs also offer excellent employment opportunities for the youth in our community.   Each summer we hire over 200 part time staff to help with sports leagues, park maintenance, special events, day camp and Deer Lake Beach.

Our Senior Community Center in Clintonwood Park offers health and fitness programs, day and overnight travel options, daily drop in activities, transportation services, Meals on Wheels delivery and a specialist to help seniors locate the resources they need in our community.

We pride ourselves on our caring and involved staff and recently one of our long-time park staff members won an award through the Michigan Recreation & Parks Association.  Larry Hess was awarded the Park Resources Leadership award for his dedication to our park services.  We were also awarded the Facility Design award for the renovations on Brady Lodge and the Therapeutic Recreation Programming award for our Buddy Sports program.

We love being a part of the Clarkston Community because of all the people here who are working hard, like we are, to keep this vibrant community a great place to live, work and play!
