Chamber President

Bill Burr

All Saints Cemetery

Thoughts from your President:

This is my last article as my term of office winds down.  It has been a privilege to serve as your President this year.  I have had the pleasure of meeting so many of you this year and I trust your membership is worth its weight in gold.  I know mine is!

The Chamber’s activities this year have been awesome.  The many events have all proved that this is a great Chamber.  As a board member we look at the finances and I assure you that the Chamber is running on all cylinders.  We have surpassed our budget in Concerts, Women in Business, Expo, Golf and Beer University.  What this tells me is that we offer a great brand in everything we do.

Please continue to attend the various mixers, this is where you meet and learn what is going on and use it as a way to market your business.  All of us need help getting the word out about what we do and where we do it and what better way that to use the resources of your wonderful Chamber.

You will still see me around at the various events and I am always willing to help if you ask.

Continue to prosper!

Bill Burr

NEW Security Seminar

Thursday, 9/8/11 at the Independence Township Hall at 7:00 p.m.

Email your issues & concerns ahead of time. EMAIL

The Oakland County Deputy, who is one of the speakers, has asked if we could find out what issues local businesses have faced with security breaches.

Although we are not going to air this on cable as originally planned, Rick Gutowski from the Citizen Cable Committee has agreed to provide introductions and in general host the seminar. It should not be longer than one hour and your members and the general public are invited (and encouraged) to attend.

It is our hope to not only increase awareness of the problem but also explain cost-effective preventative measures that can be taken by home and business owners. We also hope this will lead to a greater emphasis on neighborhood watch programs.

NEW Advanced Counseling is partnering with Habitat for Humanity-Oakland County in September.  We will have about 6-10 of our therapists and clerical staff working at a building site on Friday, September 9.  In addition, Advanced is catering lunch for the volunteers and the Habitat supervisory crew that day.  The home we will be working on is in Waterford.

We will be at a build site at 610 Winding in Waterford on Friday, Sept. 9, starting at 8am.  We will break for lunch (that we are catering) at 11:30 and resume work at 12:30 and be off site by 4.

We are very excited to be doing this and have actually been working on this for a couple of months, trying to get a day that would work for the Habitat folks, as well as when our therapists could take time off work.

NEW OXFORD BANK AND CINTAS HOST FREE COMMUNITY SHRED DAY ON SEPTEMBER 24th

Oxford, Michigan -- Oxford Bank, a subsidiary of Oxford Bank Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: OXBC), and Cintas will host a FREE shredding event on Saturday, September 24th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  It will be held at the Bank’s Clarkston Office, located at 7199 North Main Street (M-15).  For more information, please call 248-625-0011.

This project highlights the Bank’s on-going efforts to provide resources to the entire community for the prevention of identity theft and fraud.  According to the Federal Trade Commission, more than nine million Americans are victims of identity theft or identity fraud every year.  The majority of ID theft occurs when the thief has direct contact with the victim’s personal information, through a stolen or lost wallet, rifling through a mailbox or trashcan, or even lifting documents from inside a home or business.  It is a devastating crime from which it can take victims years to recover.  Secure destruction of personal documents is the first step in identity protection.

This is Oxford Bank’s fourth shredding event.  The last two events (Oxford – May 7, 2011 and Clarkston – September 11, 2010) have produced 10.57 tons of shredded and recycled paper; equating to the preservation of 180 trees.

Participating individuals and businesses can shred credit cards, pre-approved credit offers, insurance forms, charge card receipts, paycheck stubs, credit applications, personal documents listing social security numbers, and more.

It's never to early to be thinking about EXPO.

Check out the attached info on Expo Table Covers.

The Price for the 6 ft. would be $99.99. and the price for the 8 ft. would be $109.99.  Price includes a one color imprint.  Set up would be $80.00. Also if any Chamber Members are looking for any pass outs for the Expo, remember all Chamber Members get special pricing.

Please help us make a difference in the lives of Oakland County’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens, our seniors and the disabled.

We are hosting a fundraiser with proceeds dedicated to establish the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Organization in Oakland County.  The Interfaith program originally began in Macomb County 18 years ago.  It is a most impressive charitable organization that serves a significant segment of our population that is often forgotten.  Currently Oakland County does not have an organization of this kind that will assist our older and disabled residents free of charge.  Macomb County has generously offered their time and resources to help us start our program but we are in need of funding for us to begin.

On October 15, 2011 "Let Your Heart Light Shine", a formal dinner dance, will be held at the Great Oaks Country Club in Rochester Hills.

Blood and Platelet donors needed now!

Since Hurricane Irene began its path along the East Coast, the storm has forced the cancellation of numerous American Red Cross blood drives. It is expected that additional drives will be postponed in the coming days due to storm damage.
The Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations in areas unaffected by this storm.
Since platelets have a shelf-life of just five days, it is imperative that there are enough platelets on hand to meet the needs of patients across the country and those in storm affected areas.
Nationwide, around 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders. These patients and others rely on blood products during their treatment.
When disaster strikes, this need does not diminish. And if collections are negatively impacted by a disaster, the long-term needs of these patients could also be affected.
It’s the blood products already on the shelves that help save lives before, during and after a disaster.
Please consider giving blood or platelets now:
To schedule an appointment to give blood, please call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit us online at redcrossblood.org.
